On day 20 of advent we’re looking at how the lockdown and other effects of the pandemic put a great strain on our local leisure centres. With no paying customers for three months and a vastly reduced number of visitors after the lockdown was lifted the leisure centres were on the brink of closure.
Adur and Worthing’s MPs and Conservative councillors ensured that a rescue package could be put in place. Leader of Worthing Borough Council Dan Humphreys led the national effort for district councils successfully calling for government support with interviews on BBC news and Sky News at Worthing’s leisure centres.
Most of the leisure centres are now open again and the remaining ones will reopen in the new year thanks to financial support from Adur and Worthing councils.
