Tim Loughton, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, hosted a successful event in Parliament on Wednesday in aid of West Sussex-based assistance dog charity, Canine Partners, which works to help people with disabilities enjoy greater independence and quality of life by partnering them with highly trained dogs.
Over a hundred people attended the event on the House of Commons Terrace to support the organisation and it was great to see that they are now extending their expertise and support to injured servicemen and women who could benefit enormously.
Attendees were provided with a demonstration by some of the dogs in training which included:
- opening and closing doors
- retrieving items from cupboards and shelves
- pressing buttons and switches
- unloading washing machines
- undressing owners
It was clear to see the inspirational work the dogs undertake and the immeasurable difference they make to the lives of their partners. Many of the people present gave personal accounts of how their dog saved them from the brink of dependence on carers and state services. Testimonials have included one user of the service commenting, ‘You stop being “that disabled person in a wheelchair" and start being "the person with the really cool dog".’
With over 1.2 million people in the UK using wheelchairs, there is huge potential for expansion. At current capacity, the charity is able to partner 60 people a year with assistance dogs who are all trained individually to meet the bespoke requirements of their partners.
For an ever-growing charity which receives over 600 requests a year, the demand on their services is greater than ever. As a result, the immediate plan for Canine Partners is to open a second training centre in the Midlands which will double their capacity and double the number of people helped.
The charity receives no Government funding and is solely run on the generosity of individuals, companies, clubs and societies as well as legacies, trusts and foundations.
Tim welcomed Councillor Norah Fisher, Mayoress of Worthing, and her loyal canine partner, Herbie who have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the high profile branch in Worthing.
